About IPL Our History
1939 - The business founded in 1939 by Mr. J.Émile Métivier carried on its activities under the name “L’Industrie Provinciale Enregistrée” and was involved in the manufacture and sale of household articles.
1950 - IPL expands production of brooms and mops to manufacture all types of brushes, including the Dr. Hardy toothbrush.
1952 - IPL acquires its first injection press to create their own toothbrush handles and cases.
1961-1970
- IPL manufactures the first Bonhomme Carnaval effigy for Quebec City’s world-famous winter carnival.
- IPL introduces the first house-cleaning products onto the Quebec market at the end of the 1950s.
- IPL creates a 5-gallon industrial packaging bucket for storing Orleans Island strawberries.
- IPL markets the outdoor seashell plastic chair, IPL’s first export to the United States.
- IPL begins producing the first plastic beverage crates for Lucky One’s home delivery service. This new concept attracts contracts with Coca-Cola, 7-Up, and Pepsi.
1971-1980
- IPL markets the first monoblock chair in Canada.
- IPL designs and produces the first skidoo plastic covering for the Outboard Marine company of Peterborough, Ontario. This yields important new contracts with Bombardier and Motoski.
1982 - IPL begins producing automotive parts for Detroit’s Ford Motor Company.
1984 - IPL becomes the first Canadian company to receive Q1-preferred quality certification.
1985
- IPL becomes a public company listed on the Montreal Stock Exchange.
1987
- IPL acquires Edmundston Paper Box Ltd in New Brunswick, a manufacturer for the food market.
1990
- IPL acquires a 3300 ton injection press for molding wheeled carts, a Canadian first.
1993
- IPL implements the International Quality system ISO 9001. The first company in North America to do so in its field.
1996
- IPL aquires a new plant situated in St-Lazare, Quebec for extruded molded products.
1998
- IPL in December receives the automobile certification QS-9000.
2000
- IPL aquires Plastique Gagnon situated in Lawrenceville, Quebec. Named IPL Estrie, this new plant molds industrial products.
2003-2006
- The Company announces the closing of its subsidiary, IPL Prelude Corp. (automotive products).
- The Company obtains for its plants in St-Damien (injection) and St-Lazare (extrusion) ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system (ISO 14001).
- The Company obtains for its plants in Edmunston (New-Brunswick) the certification for its quality management system (ISO 9001 and Hazard Analysis and Critical Points “HACCP”). The latter international norm ensures product security as well as reducing barriers to trade with the United States.
